Personnel, Technology & Safety

Personnel

Malteser's flying medical personal include accompanying specialists (anaesthesiologists, surgeons, internists, accident surgeons and neonatologists) as well as paramedics and expert nursing assistants for anaesthesiology and intesive medical care. These personnel are stationed at all important airports in the area of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Only our own medical personnel accompany the air ambulances; they are specially trained for these deployments and continuously undergo refresher and advanced training.

In addition, Malteser provides Lufthansa with some of the paramedics for deployment in the PTC. These paramedics have been specially trained by Lufthansa for that mode of transportation, and take care of intensive care patients on long-haul flights in wide-bodied aircraft all over the world.

Technology

We always try to make sure that the patient is give the best possible care on board. For example, the air ambulances carry Hamilton T5 ventilators and the Zoll X series of monitoring Systems. This comination is unique in the European market and sets the standard.

An incubator and special child restraint systems ensure safe transport of the smallest patients on board.

Safety

Apart from the well-being of the patient, safety always has the highest priority. We work exclusively with renowned airlines and try to choose direct flights as much as possible so as to make the patient's journey as comfortable as possible.

Apart from technical maintenance of the machinery by certified specialists, in air ambulances, the complete aircraft is fully disinfected after every deployment. This is to ensure that patients and our personnel do not get infected by any bacteria that the previous patient might have carried. This disinfecting is done by atomisation, which is far more thorough than the traditional disinfecting by wiping - using atomisation, apart from the respiratory air present in the aircraft, all those areas that are difficult to reach manually also get disinfected.

The disinfecting process covers the following spectrum:

Bactericides EN 1040, EN 1276, MRSA, VRE. Fungicides EN 1275, EN 1650, EN 13624. Mycobactericides EN 14348. Virucides active sur HBV, HCV, HIV, BVDV, human unfluenza, SRAS, Vaccinia, H5N1, H1N, EN 14476 Norovirus, Adénovirus, Rhinovirus, Rotavirus. Sporicides EN 13704 Clostridium Difficile.
